Rule Groups - Overview
What are rule groups?
A Rule Group is a logical container within the Rule Engine module of Loyalife. It organizes multiple rules that process transaction data, member attributes, and business logic to credit/debit loyalty points or trigger actions.
Rule Groups help structure your loyalty program's earning logic, ensuring priority-based execution, efficiency, and scalability.

Access Rule Group
You can access the Rule Groups Manager by clicking on the "Manage All Rule Group" option at the top right in the Rule Engine tab as shown in the image.

A rule group can be created based on - product code, sub-product code, date range and max points. A single rule group can contain multiple rules at once.
Why Are Rule Groups Important?
1. Organized Business Logic
- Groups together related rules (e.g., rules for credit cards, loans, travel).
- Easier to manage, test, and audit.
2. Efficient Processing
- Ensures rules are executed in priority order, so if one rule triggers, others in the group don’t unnecessarily execute.
- Improves performance, especially when there are complex loyalty programs with many rules.
3. Control & Flexibility
- Can restrict rules to specific:
- Product Codes (e.g., Credit Card, Loan)
- Sub-product Codes (e.g., Gold Credit Card, Platinum Loan)
- Date Ranges (for time-based campaigns)
- Defines Maximum Points caps (Monthly or Lifetime) to limit liability.
Here are some key characteristics and purposes of rule groups in a rule engine:
- Organization: Rule groups categorize rules for easier management.
- Modularity: Rule groups separate rule logic for better understanding and maintenance.
- Prioritization: Rule groups help determine the priority of rule evaluation and execution.
- Scoping: Rule groups define the scope in which rules are applied.
Example: For an airline business
Geographic Rules Group: For international airlines, this group can contain rules specific to
regions or countries.Rules:
- Rule 1: Different point-earning rates for flights within North America and international flights.
- Rule 2: Unique redemption options for flights to specific regions.
- Rule 3: Special promotions tailored to customers in specific countries.
Benefits: Geographic rule groups allow tailoring loyalty program rules to regional
preferences and market conditions.
